It is amazing to me that brazen criminals commit violent crimes in the manner in which they do. I have seen videos of law enforcement officers engaged in a traffic stop of a motorist and the motorist attacks the officer. The dash camera in the officer’s vehicle records vehicles just driving by with no one stopping to assist the officer.
Being a retired Police Lieutenant, I am in shock at how people could see this physical altercation and just drive by. Whether you feel qualified to stop and assist the officer or not, I would ask that you do stop and assist the officer. The help you render could be something as simple as holding on to the suspect’s arm. Or it could be using your skills to put an immediate halt to the suspect’s aggression. Or it could be calling 9-1-1 to alert the call taker of the officer’s emergency as they may not have had the opportunity to ask for emergency assistance.
It could be a matter of life and death for one of two, and then how would you feel if you elected not to stop and get involved to help the officer as you just go on about your day?
